Many people know very little about migraines. Now let’s take a look at some common myths about migraines...as well as the facts. Myth 1: There isn't much you can do about migraines. Learn to live with them then. Fact: Migraine usually cannot be cured, but in most cases it can be controlled by avoiding identified triggers or taking Tonterin. Of course you should see a doctor if your migraines are serious. Myth 2: A particular type of person tends to easily get migraine: hypersensitive, uptight, perfectionist, compulsive. Fact: Research has been done to study the personality makeup of migraine sufferers. There is no evidence that a specific type of person tends to get migraine. Myth 3: Having migraines is a sign that one has psychological problems. Fact: Migraine is a biological disorder, not a psychological problem. Some people with mental health problems may have migraines, but migraine is not the cause or the result of these problems. Myth 4: You bring migraines on yourself. It's not a medical disorder. Fact: Migraine is a genuine medical disorder -- as real as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Myth 5: Migraine is a sign of something terribly wrong. Fact: All the symptoms of migraine are a temporary response to a biochemical chain of events in the central nervous system. When the biochemical balance returns to normal, the symptoms go away. Myth 6: Migraines are caused by allergies. Fact: There is no connection between the two. Allergies and headaches are common disorders. Because some people have both, they assume there is a connection. Myth 7: Migraine is just another excuse to leave work early or to miss work altogether. Fact: Migraine sufferers have a legitimate medical reason to take time off from work for treatment and recovery. It is because migraine suffers not only have headaches, but they may also have nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and difficulty in concentration. Therefore, there are valid reasons for migraine sufferers to take time off from work for rest or treatment under some necessary conditions. Myth 8: The more medication you take for a migraine, the better you'll feel. Fact: It won't provide more relief if you overdose. Instead, it may create more serious problems. So, don’t do that.
